What is Kundli? Complete Guide to Reading Your Vedic Birth Chart

Learn what a Kundli (Janam Kundli) is, how it is prepared, and how to read the 12 houses, planetary positions, and Nakshatras in your Vedic birth chart.

What is a Kundli?

A Kundli (also called Janam Kundli or birth chart) is a map of the sky at the exact moment you were born. It shows where all the planets — Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu — were positioned in the zodiac.

In Vedic astrology (Jyotish Shastra), this chart is the foundation for understanding your personality, career, relationships, health, and life events.

How is a Kundli Prepared?

To generate an accurate Kundli, you need three things:

  • Date of birth — the exact date
  • Time of birth — as precise as possible (even a few minutes matter)
  • Place of birth — the city determines your Ascendant (Lagna)
  • Modern Kundli software like MyRashifal+ uses astronomical calculations (ephemeris data) to compute the exact planetary positions. We then apply the Lahiri Ayanamsa to convert from tropical to sidereal positions, which is the standard used in Indian Vedic astrology.

The 12 Houses in a Kundli

Each house in a Kundli represents a different area of life:

    The 9 Planets (Navagraha)

Vedic astrology considers 9 celestial bodies:

  • Sun (Surya) — Soul, authority, father
  • Moon (Chandra) — Mind, emotions, mother
  • Mars (Mangal) — Energy, courage, siblings
  • Mercury (Budha) — Intelligence, communication
  • Jupiter (Guru) — Wisdom, expansion, wealth
  • Venus (Shukra) — Love, beauty, luxury
  • Saturn (Shani) — Discipline, karma, hardship
  • Rahu — Worldly desires, obsession (North Node)
  • Ketu — Spirituality, detachment (South Node)
  • What are Nakshatras?

The zodiac is divided into 27 Nakshatras (lunar mansions), each spanning 13°20'. Your Moon's Nakshatra is especially important — it determines your:

  • Vimshottari Dasha (planetary period system)
  • - Personality traits

    - Compatibility in marriage matching
